A rising senior at Dickinson University, Schazz Lee, is set to participate and volunteer for his fifth year at Shootout for Soldiers Baltimore. The 20-year-old has seen the event transform from its humble beginnings on Lake Avenue at Boys’ Latin High School to its 8-city tour set for this summer. Why does he love helping so much?
“It just happens that my pastime and a cause that I support are intertwined together, which is awesome and an opportunity not to pass up,” Lee said. “I volunteer for the brave individuals that defend and have defended our country. They keep us safe by risking their lives. SFS is a way for me to give back.”
If you ask anyone on the Shootout for Soldiers team, they’ll tell you that Lee is one of the reasons the first few events in history were successful. Lee has helped out with the Baltimore Livestream, getting teams organized on the field, distributing jerseys and keeping fellow volunteers in high spirits.
Lee grew up in the Baltimore lacrosse community. He sees this event each year as a chance to give back to that community, while keeping in touch with those he grew up playing with.
“The lacrosse community comes together and enjoys the game that we love while celebrating our troops and former troops.”
If you spot Lee helping out at Shootout for Soldiers Baltimore on June 22nd and 23rd, pick his brain about his favorite SFS memory. He has plenty. From saving the apparel from drowning in 2013 during the thunderstorm at McDonogh, to talking with John Harbaugh on the sidelines while he watched his daughter play, Lee has seen quite a lot!
“I just want to that the Shootout Staff for allowing to participate and volunteer for 5 years,” he said. “It has been a pleasure and the highlight of my summers, and I hope it continues.”
