Shootout for Soldiers Ohio came back for its fifth year with one goal in mind: make it the best year yet. Over the course of the 24 hour event and with the help of every team, player, and volunteer, SFS Ohio raised its most ever at $74,271!

The outstanding efforts of everyone involved will allow a portion of the fundraising to benefit local charity partners M.A.S.H. Pantry and The Overwatch Partnership. M.A.S.H. Pantry “offers Central Ohio – Veterans, Military families, and Survivors: food, clothing, personal hygiene items, along with a Mobile Outreach Program (fresh produce markets), PTSD Program with PEER Support meetings, resources, and more!” The Overwatch Partnership “provides mentoring and career development support to the veteran community, while supporting local veteran hiring advocacy efforts.”

As part of the 24 hour event, various games such as the All-Goalie Game, which has become a staple at SFS Ohio, a father-son game, and an Ohio All-Stars game took place.

The Top Fundraising Team, The Goalie Way, raised a total of $6,321. Hunter Rovere, the SFS Ohio Top Fundraiser, contributed $2,595 to that total making him the winner of a Cascade Maverik x Shootout for Soldiers helmet. Rovere is also now in the running to win a second helmet that’s reserved for the Top Fundraiser Nationwide.

As for the “Keep Your Jerseys” contest, our SFS Ohio winner was St. Charles Alumni, who went beyond their goal of $750 to raise $4,113 – almost 550 percent more than they hoped.

But one of the top highlights might just have been when one player pulled an Uno reverse card out of his sock and presented it to a ref!

“Shootout for Soldiers Ohio 2019 was an outstanding event,” said Merry Troper, Executive Director and SFS Ohio Organizer. “Our new host Olentangy Orange High School stepped up and provided Shootout for Soldiers Ohio the most successful SFS Ohio event yet. The entire Olentangy Community embraced SFS Ohio and our mission of supporting our veterans. I can’t thank our sponsors, teams, players, coaches, volunteers, families and SFS Ohio committee members enough for going above and beyond!

“I know that SFS Ohio 2020 will be even bigger and better as we educate the community about the challenges our veterans face on a daily basis, where we can engage our veterans through the power of sports and then amplify the impactful projects that support our veterans and their local communities.”
